The Best: Maryland, New Mexico, Wyoming, South Dakota

Welcome to the States of the United States
Welcome to Maryland, 2019; New Mexico, 1987; Wyoming, 1983; South Dakota, 2019.
After a year of state welcome signs, the Geographically Yours Merit Awards go to four states with welcome signs that fully capture the spirit of place. Remember: First impressions are lasting impressions. Maryland: Refreshingly colorful, thanks, in part, to its quilt-like flag. New Mexico: Warm and enchanting, a simple mood-setter that captures perfectly the colors of the desert. Wyoming: Perfect combination of graphic and textual elements, and edgy enough to say "Howdy" instead of "Welcome." South Dakota: One way of saying the state should simply be renamed Rushmore.  Alas, the welcome signs for New Mexico and Wyoming have gone downhill since these two pictures were taken.

The Worst: California, Delaware, Colorado, Indiana

Welcome to the States of the United States
Welcome to California, 2019; Delaware, 2015; Colorado, 2018; Indiana, 2018.
After a year of state welcome signs, the Geographically Yours Demerit Awards go to four states with signs that beg for some graphic-designer attention. Remember: You get only one chance to make a first impression. California: Unimaginatively institutional! Delaware: Ditto. And, is the governor really the one thing you want visitors to know about your state? Colorado: Colorless, an unforgivable shortcoming for a state whose name contains the word "color." Indiana: So dated! So crowded! And so painful to look at because of that red-blue color scheme!
